Trump announces visit to King Charles III: ‘Honoured to return to the UK’
US president to be received on informal visit in September, ahead of second state visit planned for 2026
Donald Trump has announced that he will meet King Charles III next September, during a visit to the UK that will pre-empt his second official state visit, scheduled for 2026. The US president confirmed the invitation during a press briefing in the Oval Office, calling the UK ‘a great country’ and underlining the uniqueness of the event: ‘This is the first time a second state visit has taken place in two separate presidential terms,’ he said. ‘I have great respect for the royal family.’
Trump made it clear that the informal September trip will be a prelude to the official event scheduled for February, during which he will stay at Windsor Castle. ‘It is a great honour to have been chosen,’ he said.
The announcement comes at a time of tension between Washington and London, caused by the Trump administration’s protectionist policies. In June, the UK will find out whether it will be hit by new US tariffs of up to 10% or whether it will be able to negotiate a bilateral trade deal to avoid them.
