Gulf of America and the George Washington Channel: when geopolitics becomes farce… Will these really be the real problems of the States?

Donald Trump and Elon Musk continue to rewrite global geography in their own way. The president of the United States has officially announced his willingness to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’, a step he says will strengthen the national identity of the United States. In parallel, tycoon Elon Musk launched his own provocation on social media, proposing to rename the English Channel the ‘George Washington Canal’.

On X, Musk posted a tweet accompanied by a portion of a map with the comment: ‘New name for the water that divides England and France’. The message, between irony and adherence to Trump’s line, immediately sparked debate.

It is not the first such initiative in the Maga movement. Besides the ‘Gulf of America’, Trump has already signed an executive order to rename Mount Denali in Alaska to ‘Mount McKinley’, in honour of President William McKinley.

Reactions to these initiatives have been mixed: supporters of Trump and Musk see them as strengthening America’s presence in the world, while critics call them populist moves that alter historical symbols without real utility.

One wonders, with all the problems related to the actuality of the historical moment, what sense it all makes and how it could possibly benefit American interests, but above all the population of the greatest power on the planet, such unclassifiable shots.
