USA, Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk closed
The US Department of Government Efficiency ceased operations ahead of schedule
The US Department of Government Efficiency, established by the Donald Trump administration under the supervision of Elon Musk, has officially ceased operations, eight months ahead of schedule. The announcement was confirmed by Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), who specified that most of the functions of the Department of Government Efficiency have been absorbed by the OPM and that the agency no longer constitutes a centralised entity.
Musk and Trump: collaboration in the spotlight
The collaboration between Elon Musk and the Trump administration had attracted considerable public attention. As a special adviser, Musk had direct access to government data and had led initiatives aimed at cutting federal spending. For months, the Department of Government Efficiency analysed federal systems and the personal data of millions of citizens, with the stated aim of eliminating inefficiencies, also working on sensitive information from competing companies.
Early closure and absorption of functions
With the closure of the Department of Government Efficiency, most of the activities and analyses carried out by the department will be transferred to the OPM, the agency already responsible for managing federal personnel. Kupor stressed that there will be no central structure dedicated to government efficiency, marking the end of a project that had generated considerable media attention and public debate.
