China and Russia strengthen partnership: Wang Yi in Moscow for talks with Lavrov and Putin
Beijing confirms support for Moscow and reiterates willingness to play a constructive role for peace
China says it is ready to play a ‘constructive role’ in resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while continuing to support Moscow in defending its national ‘interests’. This was reiterated by Wang Yi, head of Chinese diplomacy, in an interview with the Russian Ria agency during his official visit to Moscow.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Wang Yi a ‘dear friend’ and stressed that relations between Russia and China have reached ‘unprecedented levels’, with cooperation set to intensify in all areas. Beijing, for its part, maintains a position of apparent neutrality without explicitly condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while economic ties between the two countries continue to strengthen.
A meeting between Wang Yi and Vladimir Putin is expected in the coming days, ahead of a possible summit between the Russian president and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The Kremlin called Putin and Wang ‘old good friends and partners’, while Lavrov stressed the importance of coordination between Moscow and Beijing as a ‘stabilising factor’ in global geopolitics.
Next month, Xi Jinping is expected to visit Russia for ‘Victory Day’, confirming a strategic partnership that has only grown stronger since February 2022.
