Merz convincing in debate on RTL, audience favours Union for a possible grand coalition with SPD
Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU candidate, triumphed in the four-way debate broadcast on RTL-ntv, convincing 32% of viewers according to a survey conducted by the Forsa institute. In second place was outgoing chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) with 25 per cent, while Robert Habeck (Greens) and Alice Weidel (AfD) had 18 per cent. Only 7% of the respondents did not give an advantage to any of the candidates.
The poll results reflect the growing favour towards the Union (CDU/CSU), which in the latest polls stands at 30% of the voting intentions. The AfD has 21%, followed by the SPD with 15%, the Greens with 13%, and other smaller forces. The majority of citizens (39%) prefer a ‘grand coalition’ between CDU/CSU and SPD, with Merz leading the government, despite tensions between the two parties on issues such as immigration and the relationship with the AfD.
