Trump Says New Iranian Leadership Wants Talks, “We Will Do It”

The U.S. president says Washington is ready to engage after Tehran’s new leadership signaled interest in dialogue following the killing of Ali Khamenei

Trump Says New Iranian Leadership Wants Talks, “We Will Do It,” marking a potential diplomatic opening after a period of sharp military escalation between Washington and Tehran.

President Donald Trump said the new leadership in Iran has expressed a willingness to engage and that he is prepared to respond. “They want to talk, and I have agreed to do it. So I will speak with them,” Trump said in comments to The Atlantic, referring to the political transition in Tehran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The remarks signal a shift in tone after weeks of heightened tensions linked to the collapse of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Trump has repeatedly stated that he will not allow Tehran to develop a nuclear weapon, and the recent joint U.S.-Israel military operation marked a dramatic escalation.

Asked whether talks could have happened earlier, Trump said Iran had missed previous opportunities. “They should have done it before. They should have given us what was very practical and easy to do. They waited too long. They could have made a deal,” he said, adding that several former Iranian counterparts are no longer alive following the strike.

Trump Says New Iranian Leadership Wants Talks, “We Will Do It” as he frames the moment as a new phase in relations shaped by a change at the top of Iran’s power structure. While he did not outline specific conditions for renewed negotiations, his comments indicate that Washington is open to direct engagement under the new leadership.

In separate interviews with Fox News and CNBC, Trump defended the recent military campaign, saying operations were proceeding “ahead of schedule” and describing the outcome as highly successful. He also dismissed concerns about oil price volatility following the escalation, saying he was not worried about economic fallout.

Trump Says New Iranian Leadership Wants Talks, “We Will Do It” underscores the central message from the White House: despite the military confrontation and the killing of Iran’s top leadership, the administration is prepared to enter talks if Tehran’s new authorities formally pursue dialogue.
