European leaders declare themselves ready to participate in peacekeeping missions, if necessary, to ensure long-term stability in Ukraine
In the context of the special summit of European leaders, where plans to end the war in Ukraine were discussed, several countries expressed their readiness to send troops, if necessary, to contribute to the security of the country. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was ‘ready and willing’ to commit troops on the ground to ensure Ukraine’s security in an eventual peace agreement. Starmer stressed that a lasting peace is crucial to deter further aggression by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Germany has also declared itself ready to contribute to peacekeeping missions if there is an international legal basis and a clear mandate. German MP Jurgen Hardt expressed his intention to participate in missions to ensure a cease-fire, while making it clear that he does not intend to intervene directly in the war.
The Swedish Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, also ruled out the possibility of unilateral military intervention, but confirmed that Sweden does not rule out sending troops on a peacekeeping mission once a ‘just and sustainable peace’ has been achieved that respects international law and ensures that Russia can no longer threaten Ukraine.
