Moscow insists on direct talks with Washington, without the intervention of European countries. Russia claims control over Ukrainian territories, threatening the end of the country by 2025 and the possible annexation of Moldova

Vladimir Putin, through his advisor Nikolai Patrushev, reiterated that Russia does not intend to negotiate with the EU regarding the war in Ukraine, indicating that any negotiations must take place exclusively between Moscow and Washington, without the participation of Western countries. ‘We have nothing to talk about with London or Brussels,’ Patrushev said, arguing that the EU leadership does not fully represent the various member states, such as Hungary and Romania, which have an interest in maintaining a balanced policy towards Russia.

Regarding the future prospects for Ukraine, Patrushev threatened that the country could cease to exist as a state within this year, and indicated the possibility of Moldova being annexed to another state or disappearing altogether. Russia also set as a condition for any treaty the confirmation of its control over Crimea and the four annexed regions in south-eastern Ukraine in 2022.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the statements of President-elect Donald Trump, who expressed his intention to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine. However, Lavrov pointed out that Russia has not yet received any concrete proposals on how to proceed with the negotiations and said that Moscow awaits specific initiatives from the future US president.

Russia, which occupies a significant part of Ukrainian territory, has confirmed the annexation of five Ukrainian regions: Crimea in 2014, and the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporizhia in 2022.
