Elon Musk will have a White House office for the new department under Trump
The billionaire will lead the Office of Government Efficiency, but questions remain about his official position and conflict of interest
Elon Musk will have an office in the White House complex, where he will head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOEG) that was given to him by President Donald Trump. The entrepreneur, who owns several companies with billion-dollar contracts with the federal government, will work in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, adjacent to the White House, although it is unclear what kind of access he will have to the West Wing.
Despite his prominent position, some members of Trump’s staff, such as Steve Bannon, downplay Musk’s role, saying he will not have the power to make key decisions. However, his influence is clear: Musk has contributed significantly to Trump’s campaign, funding millions of dollars to support the MAGA movement. Musk has also been actively involved in the process of selecting ministers and staff, although this has generated some tensions within Trump’s entourage.
The DOEG department, which will not have the status of an official government department, raises questions about conflict of interest, given that Musk’s companies work with the federal government. Even if Musk could forgo a salary, the legal and tax implications of his position remain to be clarified, especially with regard to the transparency and management of his contracts with the government.
