German diplomacy and focus on China
In parallel, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the war in Ukraine will be one of the main topics in talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his visit to Beijing. Baerbock emphasised how the conflict has repercussions for global security, highlighting the link between European and Asian stability, especially in light of North Korea’s involvement in the war.
Russian Attacks on Ternopil
While Scholz was visiting Kiev, the city of Ternopil in western Ukraine was hit by a wave of Russian drones. The attack resulted in one dead, three injured and the evacuation of about 100 people. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 52 of the 110 drones launched during the night were intercepted, but a significant number managed to hit civilian targets.
A fire broke out in a residential building hit by one of the drones. The mayor of Ternopil, Serhiy Nadal, reported that emergency teams worked tirelessly to contain the flames and rescue residents. ‘Doctors are doing what they can to treat the injured, while we have organised temporary shelters for the displaced,’ he added.
