Hollywood mogul accused of harassing young male actors

Tyler Perry abuse is at the center of new legal controversies, with two lawsuits accusing the U.S. director, producer, and actor of sexual misconduct against emerging Hollywood actors. The first lawsuit was filed in June, followed by a second complaint on December 26. According to the plaintiffs’ attorneys, additional claims may be forthcoming. “There are now two lawsuits of this type, and there could be others,” Jonathan Delshad, attorney representing both plaintiffs, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Alex Spiro, Perry’s lawyer, strongly denied the allegations. “I have said this before, and I repeat: this is just a $77 million scam,” referring to the amount requested in the civil suits.

The complaints allege that Perry exploited his Hollywood position to prey on vulnerable young male actors seeking career opportunities. Derek Dixon, one of the plaintiffs and an actor on the series The Oval, claimed that Perry used his influence to harass and assault young actors who approached him for guidance and support.

A second complaint was filed by Mario Rodriguez, who appeared in Boo! A Madea Halloween. Rodriguez alleges multiple incidents of abuse over several years at Perry’s Los Angeles residence. Text messages between Perry and Rodriguez, later revealed, show the two remained in contact after the alleged incidents, with Rodriguez requesting financial assistance from the filmmaker and producer.

Delshad highlighted the power imbalance evident in the communications. “Why would Perry make himself available for favors to a minor actor? This is not normal behavior for a billionaire producer,” he said. The complaint also states that Perry allegedly gave Rodriguez $10,000 on several occasions, including after the alleged abuse incidents.

Tyler Perry, founder of Tyler Perry Studios, one of the largest film production facilities in the U.S., has long been celebrated for his success and entrepreneurship in the entertainment industry, particularly for promoting African American creativity and ownership. However, criticisms of his behavior have surfaced previously, with similar issues referenced in series like Atlanta and The Boondocks.

The Tyler Perry abuse cases mark a new chapter in ongoing legal scrutiny of Hollywood power dynamics, with emerging actors courageously coming forward.
