London Mayor Sadiq Khan responds to US President’s accusations on immigration and alleged application of Sharia law

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called Donald Trump ‘racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic’ after the US president criticised him at the UN, attacking the mayor and claiming that London is sliding towards the application of Sharia law. ‘We will not respond to his chilling and intolerant comments,’ Khan said, pointing out that the British capital remains safe and welcoming, with a record number of US citizens moving there.

Khan also highlighted the city’s achievements: “London is often number one in the world for culture, sport, investment and opportunities for personal fulfilment. We are the greatest city in the world and I am very proud of that.” The mayor, the son of Pakistani immigrants, wanted to highlight the city’s success despite Trump’s criticism.

During his speech at the UN, the US president said that London had ‘changed a lot’ due to out-of-control immigration. Last week, on his return to the United States from his state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump had already criticised Khan, calling him “one of the worst mayors in the world” and pointing out that he had not invited him to the banquet at Windsor Castle, although sources close to the mayor explained that the invitation was not planned.
