Shiite leader Qassem warns that disarmament before the end of the year could trigger internal conflict
The Lebanese government’s decision to disarm Hezbollah before the end of the year has raised serious concerns about the country’s stability. The leader of the Shiite movement, Naim Qassem, issued a clear warning, calling the move “a surrender of Lebanon to Israel” and stressing that the group is ready to “fight” to defend its arsenal.
The speech, broadcast on Al Manar television, follows a meeting between Qassem and a senior security official from Iran, Hezbollah’s main political and military sponsor. The movement’s executive reiterated that any attempt at disarmament before the end of the year could have dramatic consequences, fueling the risk of armed conflict within the country.
The situation highlights the fragility of the political balance in Lebanon, where internal and external pressures on arms control are a central issue for national and regional security. International observers are closely following developments, fearing that any tensions could trigger a wider crisis.
