After talks in Jeddah, Ukraine has accepted the US proposal for a 30-day truce with Russia. Trump talks with Putin this week as hopes grow for a total ceasefire

Ukraine has accepted the U.S. proposal for a 30-day suspension of hostilities, the State Department confirmed at the end of negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This agreement includes not only a temporary cessation of fighting, but also the resumption of sending U.S. military aid to Kiev and the restoration of cooperation in the area of intelligence information, which is crucial to Ukraine’s war strategy.

Trump optimistic for peace with Putin: “I hope he accepts ceasefire”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump announced that he will be in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days. Speaking from the White House courtyard, Trump expressed hope for a ceasefire agreement, indicating that Ukraine has already accepted the peace proposal and now awaits Russia’s response. “We hope that Putin will accept the idea of ending the war, which is causing thousands of deaths every week,” the U.S. president said.

Trump also anticipated that he will invite Volodymyr Zelensky back to Washington, despite the difficulties that marked their previous meeting, with tense tones and heated discussions. The U.S. president stressed that in order for peace to prevail, both sides must be open to dialogue, declaring, “For an agreement to work, there have to be two of them.”

Russia open to talks, but without certainties

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded positively to Trump’s words, stating that Russia “does not rule out” the possibility of talks with the United States in the coming days. However, the Russian response does not yet imply a definitive commitment, as the Kremlin is maintaining a cautious stance regarding the talks.

Truce agreement: Russia must now respond

According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement during the Jeddah talks, the steps taken by Ukraine and the United States are positive and a response from Russia is now expected. Rubio emphasized that Ukraine is ready to stop the fighting and start a dialogue, and that the decision now lies with Moscow. If Russia accepts the cease-fire proposal, Rubio said this would represent great progress; if not, the responsibility for the impasse would fall on Moscow.

Rubio also announced that he will report back to his G7 colleagues at their scheduled meeting in Canada on March 12 on the prospects for a peace agreement so that the international community can consider future moves.

National Security Adviser: “Ukraine ready for peace”

Mike Waltz, White House National Security Advisor, praised the steps taken by Ukraine, noting that Kiev has clearly demonstrated that it is willing to travel the road to peace, in line with Trump’s proposed vision. Waltz also revealed that, in the coming days, he will initiate direct talks with Russian counterparts to accelerate diplomatic processes.

“We are no longer trying to figure out whether the war will end, but how it will end,” Waltz concluded, highlighting the progress made in international diplomacy, although the timing and modalities of the end of the conflict remain uncertain.
