Trump and the Gaza dream: a Palm Beach on the Mediterranean
US president announces extraordinary plan for the Strip: ‘We will own it and make it incredible’
Donald Trump has a ‘brilliant’ idea for Gaza… turn it into the ‘Riviera of the Middle East’. No more bombs, rubble and despair, but luxury hotels, golf courses and maybe even a casino with his name on it. During his meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, the American president announced that the United States could ‘take over’ the Strip and turn it into a tourist paradise. How? Minor details.
‘We will work on it, we will own it,’ Trump said with his usual confidence, but without explaining what would happen to the two million Palestinians living there. But this is not a problem, because according to him the ‘top Middle Eastern leadership’ would support him. Too bad that Egypt and Jordan have already said no to the idea of taking in the displaced people, and that the Palestinians seem not at all enthusiastic about yet another ‘made in Trump’ stunt.
Netanyahu, for his part, has shown interest, calling the plan a potential historic breakthrough. It is a pity that Saudi Arabia, to which Israel looks to normalise relations, has already let it be known that without a Palestinian state nothing will happen. But Trump shoots straight: Gaza will be the new Palm Beach. Who cares about Palestinian rights when luxury resorts can be built?
If these are the premises, we are unlikely to see phase two of the ceasefire agreements come to life.
