Two ex-military men with a common past and a tragic ending

According to sources, there is a connection between the Tesla Cybertruck explosion in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas and the bombing of the crowd in New Orleans on New Year’s Day. Driving the exploded pick-up was Matthew Alan Livelsberger, an Army soldier stationed in Germany, who had returned to Colorado on leave. Livelsberger had served on the same military base as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the terrorist who killed at least 15 people in New Orleans2.

A shared military past

The 42-year-old Jabbar, who served in the Army between 2005 and 2015, and the 37-year-old Livelsberger, who returned on leave to Colorado from Germany, were at the same time at Fort Bragg and served simultaneously in Afghanistan. Investigators are trying to determine whether there was any contact between the two soldiers, both of whom died in their respective attacks4.

Disturbing coincidences

Both suspects rented the vehicles used in the attacks through the same app, Turo, which allows people to rent cars directly from private owners. A company spokesperson stated that ‘neither suspect had a criminal record that could identify them as a security threat’.

Official statements

US President Joe Biden stated that law enforcement officials are investigating the Tesla vehicle explosion ‘including whether there is a possible connection to the attack in New Orleans’.

The explosion in Las Vegas

In the explosion in front of Trump Tower in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, Matthew Alan Livelsberger was killed and seven other people were slightly injured. The man’s family members reported that his wife had not heard from her husband for days and confirmed that the man had rented the car.

Livelsberger’s profile

Livelsberger had a 19-year military career in the Army Special Forces. The 37-year-old from Colorado had joined the Green Berets as a communications specialist, later becoming an operations manager and sergeant in February 2023. According to his social media profile, Livelsberger had graduated with honours from Norwich University in Vermont in Strategic and Defence Studies3.

The New Orleans attack

Texas-born Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, hurled his pickup truck into a cheering crowd in New Orleans, killing at least 15 people. During his years in the Army, Jabbar had received several medals, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Jabbar was killed in the firefight with the police that followed his attack8.
