Israeli PM announces “progress” in hostage release and intensifies operations against Houthi rebels. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens with organized looting

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “some progress” has been made in negotiations for the release of hostages held in Gaza, without providing further details. During his address to the Knesset, he reiterated that Israel will not stop until it brings all the hostages home.

At the same time, Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to destroy the infrastructure of Iran-backed Houthi rebels following missile launches by the Yemeni group into Israel. The Houthis claimed the use of drones to strike the Ashkelon and Tel Aviv areas, but the Israeli military reported shooting down a drone before it could enter Israeli airspace.

Netanyahu stressed that the ongoing war in Gaza is creating new diplomatic opportunities with moderate Arab countries, which see Israel as a strategic ally in the region. He also expressed his intention to expand the Abrahamic Accords to strengthen stability in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has further escalated. According to a New York Times report, organized criminal gangs are systematically looting humanitarian aid destined for the population, making distribution operations difficult. The looting involves basic necessities such as flour and oil, the prices of which have skyrocketed in southern Gaza, further aggravating the plight of the local population.

Aid workers have accused Israel of ignoring the problem, while the Kerem Shalom crossing remains closed due to lack of security.
