Murder Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare: Luigi Mangione pleads not guilty
The 26-year-old Italian-American suspected in the murder of Brian Thompson pleads not guilty. A brilliant career past and a sudden radical turn of events mark his case
Luigi Mangione, suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, pleaded not guilty during a court hearing in New York. The young man, who was escorted by police officers, dismissed charges that he carried out the act with alleged “terrorist” motives related to anti-technology and anti-capitalist beliefs inspired by the Unabomber.
The murder took place last Dec. 4, and since then Mangione’s case has attracted attention for its transformation. Coming from a wealthy family with real estate and media interests, Mangione was considered a successful young man. After attending the prestigious Gilman School, where he graduated with honors, he had majored in computer science at Penn University, with ambitions to develop video games.
His career path led him to work as a software engineer for several technology companies, eventually settling in Hawaii, where he worked remotely. It was around this time that his life began to change dramatically: he suffered from chronic back pain that, according to friends and colleagues, affected every aspect of his existence.
After spine surgery in 2023, Mangione gradually cut ties with friends and family and moved closer to extremist ideas. Reviews left online of books linked to the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, drew a disturbing picture of his disillusionment with the capitalist system.
Mangione’s arrest has raised new questions about his motives for such an extreme act, as the case continues to unfold amid terrorism charges and a past that seemed to promise a bright future.
