Musk says goodbye and officially leaves his position in the Trump administration
After criticising the budget bill, the entrepreneur announces the end of his role as Special Government Employee
Elon Musk has officially announced his departure from the Trump administration, ending his role as Special Government Employee, a fixed-term position lasting a maximum of 130 days. ‘Now that my term is coming to an end, I would like to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce waste,’ Musk wrote in a post on X.
The tone chosen in the statement appears much more conciliatory than that expressed a few days earlier during an interview with CBS, in which Musk said he was ‘disappointed’ with the new budget law promoted by the president. ‘A bill can be great, or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both,’ he commented, openly criticising the increase in the federal deficit and stating that the bill “compromises the Doge’s mission,” the ideological and technical project on which Musk has built part of his public commitment in the administration.
Despite his resignation, Musk hinted that his commitment to the ‘Doge’-inspired vision – a combination of efficiency, decentralisation and technology – will continue outside the halls of government. ‘The Doge’s mission will only grow stronger over time, becoming a way of life in government,’ he wrote, in a passage that some analysts interpret as a political message for the future.
The announcement coincides with a delicate moment for Tesla, which has just released its financial results for the first quarter of 2025: net income fell 71% year-on-year. Among the causes of the collapse, according to several observers, is the reputational damage suffered by the brand as a result of Musk’s political activities and his overexposure as ‘head of the Doge’ in a polarising political context.
