According to Acea, Tesla lost more than 46% of registrations in the EU in the first four months of 2025. The brand, once the leader among electric cars, slips out of the top 10

2025 proves to be a difficult year for Tesla in the European market. According to figures published by Acea, the Association of European Manufacturers, the US brand recorded a sales slump of 52.6 per cent in April, and a drop of 46.1 per cent in the first four months of the year.

In the period from January to April 2025, Tesla registered 41,677 vehicles compared to 77,314 in the same period in 2024, bringing its market share to an all-time low of 1.1 per cent in the European Union.

Overtaken by 10 competitors: goodbye to leadership among electric cars

The drop in sales has also had a direct impact on Tesla’s positioning among electric vehicle manufacturers. According to an analysis by the company Jato Dynamics, in April Tesla dropped out of the top 10 best-selling electric cars in Europe, overtaken by at least 10 competing brands.

These include historical names such as Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, but also the Chinese giant Byd, which continues to gain ground in the Old Continent thanks to an increasingly competitive range and lower prices.

A wake-up call for Elon Musk’s group

The sharp slowdown in Europe is a worrying sign for Tesla, which until 2024 had firmly maintained its leadership in the electric car sector. Increased competition, a change in national incentives and increased consumer focus on alternative brands seem to have had a decisive impact on the group’s performance.

It now remains to be seen whether Tesla will be able to reverse the trend in the coming months, perhaps by focusing on new models or more aggressive marketing strategies to regain share in one of the key markets for the electric car.
