U.S.-Europe rift over Ukraine war deepens after debate between Trump and Zelensky. European leaders side with Ukraine

Ukraine’s key European allies expressed strong support for President Volodymyr Zelensky after his heated live confrontation with Donald Trump at the White House. During the meeting, the U.S. president accused Zelensky of not being “ready” for peace with Russia, prompting immediate reactions in Europe.

European Union sides with Ukraine.

Even without directly mentioning President Trump, European leaders highlighted differences with the United States over its handling of the war in Ukraine. Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, expressed solidarity with Zelensky in a social media post, stating, “Ukraine is Europe! We stand with Ukraine. The free world needs a new leader, and it is up to us Europeans to take up this challenge.”

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, addressed words of support directly to the Ukrainian president, praising the courage of the Ukrainian people. “Be strong, be fearless. You are never alone. We will continue to work with you for a just and lasting peace,” von der Leyen said.

UK and France respond to escalation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed support for Zelensky after visiting Trump in Washington. A spokesman reported that Starmer reiterated his commitment to finding a path to lasting peace based on Ukraine’s sovereignty. The meeting between Starmer and Trump did not result in an agreement for U.S. involvement in a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine, but the British premier pledged his continued support.

French President Emmanuel Macron, albeit indirectly, responded to Trump’s accusations, reiterating to reporters that “Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim.” Macron stressed the importance of remembering these basic truths in tense times like these.

Meloni calls for emergency summit

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted by calling for an emergency summit between the United States, Europe and Ukraine. “A summit is needed without delay to frankly address the current challenges, starting with Ukraine, which we have defended together in recent years,” Meloni said, highlighting the need for coordinated dialogue to manage the crisis.

Orbán and the Russian reaction

In contrast to other European leaders, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán praised Trump for his “courageous support for peace.” This stance drew approval from Moscow, with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev commenting on Telegram on the clash between Trump and Zelensky as a “brutal crackdown in the Oval Office.”
