Palestinian group demands hostage checks in Gaza as pressure grows on an agreement
Hamas has called on armed factions active in the Gaza Strip to provide updates on the condition of hostages with a view to a potential deal for their release. This was reported by the daily Asharq Al-Awsat, citing Palestinian sources. The group appears to be preparing for an agreement that could include a ceasefire with Israel and the release of the hostages.
Israel estimates that about 100 hostages are being held in the Strip, about half of whom are believed to be still alive, the Times of Israel reported. Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, expressed optimism about the negotiations, saying that there is a ‘real possibility’ of reaching an agreement with Hamas. Katz reiterated that bringing the hostages home is a ‘top priority’ for Israel as international pressure for a solution increases.
According to Katz, increased pressure on Hamas could finally lead to a concrete agreement, raising hopes for a resolution to one of the most sensitive aspects of the ongoing conflict.
