Tension between China and the United States grows after the decision to increase duties by 10 percent on Chinese goods, with Beijing warning of serious repercussions
China has threatened “countermeasures” in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to increase duties on Chinese goods by an additional 10 percent starting next Tuesday. Chinese diplomacy spokesman Lin Jian said the move will have “serious repercussions on the dialogue” between the two countries. Beijing accuses the Trump Administration of exerting pressure and coercion through a policy it calls “arbitrary.”
The accusation of using the fentanyl emergency as a pretext
China believes the Trump Administration is using the emergency of the killer drug fentanyl as an “excuse” to justify the tariff increase. Lin Jian stressed that this approach will not solve U.S. problems and will have serious consequences on cooperation between the two nations, particularly on countering drugs. Beijing said it is ready to defend its legitimate interests and rights through all necessary countermeasures.
Violation of international trade rules
China’s Ministry of Commerce also sharply criticized the U.S. decision, saying the unilateral tariffs imposed by Trump violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and harm the multilateral trade system. Beijing urged the United States to reconsider its position, highlighting the damage these policies cause to global trade relations.
China rejects allegations on narcotics
Regarding U.S. allegations on the handling of fentanyl, China reiterated that the country has one of the strictest anti-drug policies in the world. According to Beijing, the United States is trying to deflect responsibility for an internal problem by shifting the blame to China. The Chinese spokesman urged Washington to return to dialogue to resolve differences between the two countries.
