The Houthis claim two attacks against Israel, but Israeli defences prevent greater damage. In Doha, meanwhile, a ceasefire agreement is being sought in Gaza
The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed a missile attack launched against Israel last night. According to the group’s claims, the target was a power plant east of Tel Aviv. However, the Israeli army (IDF) reported that it intercepted the missile before it reached its target, although a fragment fell near the town of Modiin, causing no casualties. In the morning, the Houthis attempted a new attack, this time with a drone aimed at a military target in the Tel Aviv area, but this too was neutralised by Israeli forces.
Israeli delegation in Doha: negotiations with Hamas resume
Parallel to the attacks, an Israeli delegation consisting of representatives of Mossad, Shin Bet and the IDF left for Doha, Qatar, for a new round of negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and obtaining the release of hostages still in the hands of Hamas. These meetings represent a final attempt at mediation before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for 20 January. Israeli officials, who prefer to remain anonymous, have stated that the talks are at a critical point, with some signs of a possible breakthrough.
Arrest of Hussam Abu Safiya: Amnesty International denounces
Meanwhile, the IDF confirmed the arrest of Hussam Abu Safiya, director of the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza Strip, on charges of complicity with Hamas. According to Israeli forces, Abu Safiya allegedly allowed members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad to hide inside the hospital under his direction. Amnesty International denounced his disappearance and expressed concern for his safety, pointing out that, as early as 2023, the hospital had been searched by Israeli forces without charges being brought against him.
Although Amnesty International director general Agnes Callamard praised Abu Safiya’s work in keeping the hospital operational during the conflict, the IDF reiterated that the man is currently under investigation for involvement in terrorist activities.
