Il più anziano ex presidente americano, premiato con il Nobel per la Pace, si è spento nella sua casa di Plains, Georgia

L’ex presidente degli Stati Uniti Jimmy Carter è morto all’età di 100 anni nella sua casa di Plains, Georgia. La notizia è stata confermata dal figlio, James E. Carter III. Carter, eletto alla Casa Bianca nel 1976, è stato il più anziano ex presidente vivente nella storia del Paese.

Durante il suo mandato, Carter fu protagonista di importanti eventi internazionali come la firma degli accordi di Camp David tra Egitto e Israele, ma la sua presidenza fu segnata anche dalla crisi energetica e dall’umiliazione nazionale per la crisi degli ostaggi in Iran. Sconfitto da Ronald Reagan nel 1980, ha poi dedicato il resto della sua vita a promuovere pace e sviluppo attraverso il Carter Center, impegno che gli è valso il Nobel per la Pace nel 2002.
