Trump on Ukraine war: talks underway with Putin, but ceasefire uncertain. UK’s reaction
In an interview, Trump talks about negotiations with Putin for a cease-fire, but warns that if the Russian leader does not agree, the world will face “bad news.” British PM Starmer’s response, “We cannot allow Putin to procrastinate.”
In an interview circulated on X and YouTube, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed ongoing talks with Vladimir Putin to try to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Trump said the discussions are going “reasonably well,” while acknowledging that this is a “very complex situation” and a “terrible bloody war” that should never have erupted. The president confirmed that there is a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine and that they are trying to reach the same with Russia. He added that “we will know more on Monday,” but said he was optimistic that Putin will accept the proposal. Trump also stressed that should Russia not accept the ceasefire, the consequences for the world would be “bad news,” with an increasing number of casualties.
Regarding his promise to end the conflict in 24 hours, Trump admitted that he was “a little ironic,” explaining that what he meant was that he would be able to resolve the issue successfully, and that he believes he knows Putin well enough to get a deal done.
Meanwhile, the response to Trump’s proposal from Vladimir Putin and Russia seems less enthusiastic. The British premier, Keir Starmer, criticized the Kremlin, stating that Putin cannot be allowed to “play games” with the ceasefire agreement and that the world needs concrete actions, not unnecessary conditions. Starmer insisted that any ceasefire must be closely monitored to ensure its duration and effectiveness, adding that if Russia does not respond positively, economic pressure on Russia must be increased.
The Kremlin, through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, reiterated that the offer to lay down arms for Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region still stands, but stressed that time is running out.
