“Willing” video conference with Keir Starmer: meeting started, pressure on Moscow

During video conference with world leaders, Keir Starmer reiterated that Putin will have to “sooner or later” come to the table for a peace deal as pressure on Moscow continues

Ongoing Keir Starmer’s video conference today brings together the “coalition of the willing,” consisting of 26 international leaders, including NATO and the EU, to discuss security in Ukraine. The British premier said Russian President Vladimir Putin “sooner or later” will have to “come to the table” for a peace deal.

“If Vladimir Putin is serious about peace, it’s very simple, he must stop the barbaric attacks on Ukraine and agree a ceasefire,” Starmer opened the proceedings, urging the coalition to push for a secure and lasting peace. “We cannot sit back and wait for that to happen, we must prepare the ground for a peace that is solid and permanent,” he added, stressing the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and keep the pressure on Putin.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also participating in the video conference via video link. The Italian premier reiterated her position, expressing opposition to sending troops to Ukraine, as discussed in an interview with Starmer.

Before the video call began, Starmer issued a clear message to Putin, calling on him to stop using “delaying tactics” and to address the ceasefire without “unnecessary conditions.” The British premier also pointed out that the Kremlin’s inaction over Trump’s proposed agreement shows that Putin is not serious about peace.

“If Russia finally comes to the table, we must be ready to monitor the ceasefire to ensure lasting peace,” Starmer said, adding that if Moscow does not take concrete steps, economic pressure on Russia will have to be intensified.

On the eve of the video conference, Starmer held telephone talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, with whom he discussed recent developments on the peace plan.
