Hamas proposes five-year truce in exchange for release of hostages
A delegation from the Islamist group expected in Cairo. Meanwhile, the New York Times reveals Israel’s use of artificial intelligence in the war in Gaza
Hamas says it is ready to reach an agreement to release all hostages still held in Gaza in exchange for a five-year truce with Israel. This was announced by an official of the Islamist group, just hours after the Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo for a new round of negotiations with Egyptian mediators.
The proposal includes a simultaneous exchange: Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, as confirmed by the source quoted by Afp. The negotiations are part of a still tense context, while the conflict in the Strip continues to cause casualties and destruction.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reveals that Israel has used artificial intelligence tools to target Hamas leaders. According to the newspaper, as early as October 2023, the IDF located and killed Ibrahim Biari, commander of the Jabalia Central battalion, thanks to a system based on audio analysis of telephone communications. The attack, which also caused over 125 civilian casualties, is currently under investigation.
According to the report, Israel also employed artificial intelligence for the facial recognition of partially covered or wounded people, the creation of target lists, and the analysis of social media via Arabic-language chatbots. Many of these innovative tools originated within ‘The Studio’, the technology development centre of the prestigious Israeli intelligence Unit 8200.
Even in the search for hostages in the Gaza tunnels, AI technologies were allegedly employed, refined over time to increase the accuracy of localisations.
