Violent explosion in the port of Shahid Rajaee: causes still unknown. Buildings and vehicles damaged, extensive damage

A powerful explosion rocked the port of Shahid Rajaee in the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas today, 26 April, injuring at least 195 people, all of whom were transported to local hospitals. This was reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing local sources.

The causes of the explosion are not yet clear. Emergency teams immediately responded to the scene. The general director of crisis management of Hormozgan province confirmed that the origin of the incident is still being ascertained.

According to a Tasnim journalist, it could be the explosion of an oil tanker north of the pier, whose shock wave destroyed an office building and damaged several vehicles. Another hypothesis concerns the possible explosion of a fuel depot.

Local sources report that several port employees are among the injured, but no official confirmation has been received as yet.
