The visit planned for 8 April has been postponed by mutual agreement as the Pope continues his recovery at Casa Santa Marta after his lengthy hospitalisation

The visit to the Vatican by King Charles and Queen Camilla, originally scheduled for 8 April, has been postponed by ‘mutual agreement’. The decision was made in light of Pope Francis’ recent prolonged hospitalisation, Buckingham Palace announced in an official note. Doctors have advised the Pontiff to continue the period of rest and recovery. ‘Their Majesties send the Pope their best wishes for his convalescence and look forward to visiting him at the Vatican once he has recovered,’ the statement read. Despite the postponement of the Vatican visit, Charles and Camilla will still be in Italy, where they will visit Rome and Ravenna.

Pope Francis is spending his convalescence at Casa Santa Marta, in room 201, where he continues to receive treatment. Doctors at the Policlinico Gemelli explained that the Pontiff is continuing with drug therapy and physiotherapy, particularly respiratory therapy, to fully recover the use of speech. Despite the prescribed rest, Bergoglio is carrying out some work activities, such as signing official appointments, including that of the apostolic nuncio to Belarus, Mgr Ignazio Ceffalia.

During his convalescence, the Pope continues to celebrate Mass in the chapel on the second floor of the residence. Visits are kept to a minimum to prevent further complications, the doctors confirmed. ‘The most serious infections have been overcome,’ they said, adding that some other problems still require time and further pharmacological treatment. The Vatican’s personal physician, Luigi Carbone, assured that the Pope’s medical team is on call 24 hours a day.

The Pope is still receiving oxygen administration, with high flows during the night and cannulae during the day, interspersed with moments without oxygen, as was also seen during his first public appearance from the balcony of the Gemelli, after 38 days in hospital.

For the time being, the general audiences will not resume. The catechesis will only be broadcast in written form, as during his hospitalisation. The same modality will also be followed for the Angelus. No decision has yet been made regarding Holy Week, which will begin on 13 April, but the doctors have requested that the Pontiff convalesce for at least two months.
