After lengthy US mediation, the two Asian countries agree to end hostilities on land, air and sea
A ‘total and immediate’ ceasefire has been reached between India and Pakistan, as announced by US President Donald Trump in a social media post. ‘After a long night of US-mediated talks, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a total and immediate ceasefire,’ the White House chief wrote on X, congratulating both countries for the “common sense and great intelligence” shown.
Close behind came official confirmations from Islamabad and New Delhi. ‘Pakistan has always pursued peace in the region without compromising its sovereignty,’ said Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, confirming the agreement.
India too, through a statement by Foreign Minister Vikram Misri, confirmed that the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations had contacted his Indian counterpart at 3.35pm local time. The two senior officers agreed to a ceasefire on all fronts – land, air and sea – as of 5 a.m. local time today (1 p.m. in Italy).
The understanding, which came after growing tension between the two Asian nuclear powers, is a significant step towards stabilising the region.
