Postponement of hostage release and ceasefire violations fuel tensions between Hamas and Israel
Hamas announced the postponement ‘until a date to be determined’ of the release of more Israeli hostages, scheduled for Saturday, after accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement. According to the Islamic movement, Israel has delayed the return of displaced people to the north of the Gaza Strip and prevented the entry of humanitarian aid, in violation of its commitments. Hamas, through a statement released on its Telegram account, called on Israel to retroactively ‘compensate’ for these violations and confirmed its intention to maintain its commitment to the agreement, provided Israel does likewise.
Israel responded promptly, stating that it was ready for ‘any scenario’. The Defence Minister, Israel Katz, placed the Israeli forces (IDF) and Israeli communities close to the border with Gaza on high alert. Katz also reiterated that Israel does not intend to return ‘to the reality of 7 October’, given the attack that had led to the escalation of Israeli military operations against Hamas.
The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is consulting with the security leadership and has decided to bring forward the cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow, a step that underlines the seriousness of the situation. Tensions remain high, with both sides preparing for potential future developments.
