The Department of Government Efficiency tried to access the agency’s systems, but was stopped

Elon Musk has severely attacked Usaid, the US Agency for International Development, calling it ‘a criminal organisation’. The owner of X, who in Donald Trump’s administration heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DGE), released a video accusing the agency of being involved in ‘illegal CIA activities’ and ‘Internet censorship’.

The attack comes amid growing tension between the DOGE and the agency. Two senior Usaid security officials were suspended after denying Musk-led department officials access to the agency’s systems, CNN reports. According to sources, Doge’s staff tried to physically enter the Usaid headquarters in Washington and threatened to call security agents to gain access.

The incident is part of the recent suspensions within the Usaid: on 28 January more than 50 senior officials were removed from office after being accused of trying to circumvent the executive order by which Donald Trump froze foreign aid. The measure also affected the agency’s deputy administrator and his assistants.
