US and UK intelligence services are allegedly planning terrorist attacks against Russian military targets in Syria, involving Isis groups recently released from Syrian prisons

According to statements released by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), US and British intelligence services are allegedly developing plans to conduct a series of terrorist attacks against Russian military targets in Syria. The attacks would be carried out by Isis militants recently released by Syrian authorities in areas controlled by Damascus forces.

In response to this information, Moscow started negotiations with the Syrian government regarding the permanence of its forces in the strategic bases of Tartus and Kmeimim, which are crucial for Russian military control in the region. The Syrian authorities have reportedly confirmed that they have no intention of cancelling the cooperation agreements with Russia, at least until the negotiations are completed. Russia has demanded guarantees that no political changes or military intervention can be used as a pretext to cancel the agreement on the long-term use of the bases.

Meanwhile, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) expressed concern about the growing return of Isis, which is trying to exploit the destabilisation of the country to strengthen itself and carry out new attacks. According to the Kurds, Isis is concentrating its operations in the northern and eastern regions of Syria, territories that are relatively stable but vulnerable. The SDF has also accused Turkey and its allies, called ‘mercenaries’, of fuelling the conflict in the region, particularly in areas under Kurdish control.

Recently, Kurdish forces repelled a large-scale attack in the Manbij area, killing 22 ‘mercenaries’ and confirming the link between Isis actions and Turkish forces in the region.
