The Treasury Department designates the Cártel de los Soles as a global terrorist group and accuses the Venezuelan president of drug trafficking and agreements with the FARC

The United States has raised the reward to $25 million for information leading to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino. This was announced in an official statement from the Treasury Department, released today through US government channels.

The decision is linked to the new designation of the criminal organisation Cártel de los Soles as a “Global Terrorist Group”, with Maduro named as its leader. According to US authorities, the cartel is “a drug trafficking organisation composed of senior Venezuelan officials” and involved in international drug and arms trafficking.

The US Treasury accuses Maduro of negotiating shipments of tonnes of cocaine with the Colombian FARC in exchange for weapons. The Venezuelan president had already been indicted in March 2020 by the Southern District Court of New York for narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of weapons of war and international conspiracy. At the time, the bounty on him was set at $15 million, which has now been increased by another $10 million.

The Caracas government has not yet officially responded to the announcement, but in the past Maduro has always rejected all accusations, calling them part of an “imperialist campaign” against Venezuela.
