Trump warns Moscow: ‘Ten days for a ceasefire or tariffs will be imposed’
US President’s ultimatum to Putin on the war in Ukraine: new sanctions if the fighting does not stop. Agreement on tariffs with the EU, focus now on Beijing
‘Ten days from today’. US President Donald Trump renews his ultimatum to Vladimir Putin: if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, new sanctions and secondary tariffs will be imposed. The American leader spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One during his return flight from Scotland to Washington, explaining that “I don’t know if this will have an effect on Russia, because he obviously wants to continue the war. We will impose tariffs.”
During his mission to Scotland, Trump also concluded delicate trade negotiations with the European Union, signing a political agreement with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, which puts an end to the long standoff over tariffs between the two sides of the Atlantic. The United States now aims to strengthen dialogue with China.
‘It was a very good meeting,’ Trump said of Tuesday’s meeting with the Chinese delegation. He then announced the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with President Xi Jinping ‘before the end of the year.’ Tomorrow, meanwhile, a meeting with US negotiators is scheduled to decide whether to extend the trade truce.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, at the end of two days of talks with Beijing in Stockholm, confirmed that there will be a meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday ‘to analyse the agreement’ and that Trump will decide whether or not to maintain the tariff pause.
