The host bids farewell to CBS with a direct attack on Donald Trump, who mocked him after the announcement of the programme’s cancellation

Stephen Colbert is not leaving quietly. After CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show in May 2026, the host responded harshly to criticism from President Donald Trump. ‘Fuck you,’ Colbert began at the start of the latest episode, addressing the White House tenant directly, who on Truth had called his dismissal ‘great news,’ adding that ‘his talent was even lower than the ratings.’

The comedian, for years the leading satirical face of American television, took the opportunity to respond without restraint: ‘How dare you, sir. Would a man without talent be capable of composing the following satirical sentence? Fuck you,’ he replied ironically to the audience, to applause.

Over the next ten months, he explained, he intends to tell ‘the naked truth to those in power,’ promising a final season without censorship. ‘I can finally say what I really think about Donald Trump: he doesn’t seem to have the skills to be president. He’s just not fit for the job.’

According to rumours, CBS has decided to cancel the programme due to heavy financial losses, estimated at between $40 and $50 million a year. Colbert, however, seems determined to leave the stage in the most direct way possible: with satire as his final blow.
