United States, federal judge blocks Trump’s order against birthright citizenship
The president’s executive order would have deprived newborns and unborn children of citizenship. Judge Laplante: “Irreparable harm, I am suspending the order nationwide”
A federal judge has blocked the executive order with which US President Donald Trump intended to end birthright citizenship, the principle that guarantees American citizenship to those born on US soil.
Judge Joseph Laplante issued a preliminary injunction nationwide that indefinitely freezes the measure, aimed at excluding newborns and even unborn children of foreign parents from citizenship.
‘This is not an easy decision for the court,“ Laplante said during the hearing, stressing that ‘the deprivation of US citizenship and an abrupt change in long-standing policy are irreparable harms”.
The judge, who was appointed by George W. Bush, described US citizenship as “the greatest privilege in the world” and announced that he was suspending the order for a few days to allow the Trump administration to appeal.
