The French president responds to Trump’s accusations regarding the ceasefire between Iran and Israel and convenes a defence council at the Élysée Palace

Emmanuel Macron responds firmly to statements by US President Donald Trump, who accused him of misrepresenting the American position on the conflict between Israel and Iran. ‘France has had a clear position for years. If Trump has changed his mind, I am not responsible for his vacillations,’ the French president said during the G7 summit in Canada.

The spark was ignited after Trump, leaving the summit early, said: ‘I’m not looking for a ceasefire. Macron said that, but he’s often wrong.’ Macron immediately responded, pointing out that the request for de-escalation had been discussed and signed jointly. ‘When we talk about returning for discussions, we generally mean working towards a ceasefire,’ he said.

Defence Council at the Élysée
Faced with the worsening crisis in the Middle East, Macron announced the convening of an extraordinary defence council to assess the impact of the conflict on the security of French citizens and military bases in the region. ‘We will take stock of the threat and the initiatives to be taken,’ the French president explained.

Disagreements with Washington
Meanwhile, Trump has relaunched a veiled threat against Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei on Truth: ‘We know where he is, we’re not killing him. For now.’ A muscular line that Macron does not share. ‘We don’t want Iran to get the atomic bomb, but a regime change by force would be a serious mistake. We need to get back to talking.’

Between diplomatic differences and controversial statements, the rift between France and the United States risks further weakening the Western front at one of the most delicate moments of the Middle East crisis.
