A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar, causing death and destruction. The tremor was felt in Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed, causing casualties

A violent 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, causing severe damage and several casualties. The quake, recorded at 2.20 p.m. local time (7.20 a.m. in Italy), had its epicentre in an area 16 kilometres northwest of the city of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey. A second tremor of magnitude 6.4 followed 12 minutes later.

The earthquake was also felt in China and Thailand, with dramatic consequences especially in Bangkok, where a 30-storey skyscraper under construction collapsed, causing at least two deaths and seven injuries, while dozens of workers remain trapped under the rubble. Thai police and rescue workers have confirmed that 43 workers are still stuck in the debris.

In Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital, a hospital was declared a ‘high casualty area’, while five children and a novice lost their lives in the collapse of Wailuwun Monastery in Taungoo. Roads were damaged and ledges collapsed in several streets in the capital.

Myanmar’s military junta declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay and Naypyidaw, and appealed to the international community to send humanitarian aid. The head of the junta, Min Aung Hlaing, personally went to the hospital in Naypyidaw to visit the injured.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, Premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra proclaimed a state of emergency in Bangkok and called an urgent government meeting to deal with the crisis.

A 7.9 magnitude tremor was also felt in the Chinese province of Yunnan, but no serious damage was reported.

According to Farnesina sources, at the moment there are no Italians involved in the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, and checks on compatriots are continuing.
