Cyber actions claimed as ‘retaliation’ by pro-Russian hacker groups, national cybersecurity agency takes action

Following President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella’s speech in Marseille, in which he spoke out against Russian aggression in Ukraine, sabotage-related cyber attacks were recorded on a number of Italian sites, including those of airports, public transport and banking services. The actions were claimed as ‘retaliation’ by the pro-Russian group that targeted Italy, accused of siding with Kiev. The DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks aimed at overloading servers to make them inaccessible, but did not cause significant damage.

The National Cybersecurity Agency (NCA) promptly alerted those affected and implemented mitigation actions to limit the disruption. Intesa San Paolo was also among the recipients of the attacks, but the bank confirmed that its systems remained operational, albeit with some checks in progress. Despite the severity of the attacks, no major damage to digital services in Italy was recorded, thanks also to the effective intervention of the competent authorities.
