Israeli government denies reports of an alleged Hamas deal to release 34 hostages

Israel has officially denied that the Palestinian group Hamas has provided a list of 34 hostages to be released as part of an alleged deal. The news was first reported by The Times of Israel, but the Prime Minister’s Office clarified in a statement that no official list had been received from Hamas at this time. In contrast, broadcaster ‘N12’ reported that Hamas had handed over a list, but without specifying which of the hostages were still alive.

The crux of the hostages’ release

According to a senior Israeli official told the Times of Israel, the main stumbling block in the negotiations concerns the decision on who and how many hostages to release. The source explained that ‘Hamas will not release all the hostages’ and that the group has no interest in doing so unless Israel declares an end to the war, a prospect that, according to the official, Israel is not willing to consider.

Doha’s role in the negotiations

According to the Ynet website, Mossad chief David Barnea will travel to Doha, Qatar, for a crucial day of negotiations on a possible ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip. However, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has not officially confirmed Barnea’s trip. At the same time, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a security meeting with a small group of ministers at his office in Jerusalem to discuss the delicate situation.
