Giorgia Meloni on the cover of Time: ‘How she is leading Europe’
The American weekly magazine dedicates a long article to the Italian prime minister. International recognition and contradictions: between pragmatism and ideological legacies
Giorgia Meloni is featured on the cover of the latest issue of the American weekly magazine Time, which dedicates an in-depth article to her entitled ‘Where Giorgia Meloni is leading Europe’. The article is written by journalist Massimo Calabresi, who paints a detailed portrait of the prime minister, exploring both the shadows of her past and her current international profile.
According to the preview of the article, fascism is a theme from which Meloni cannot completely detach herself. Time recalls that the party she leads, Fratelli d’Italia, has its roots in the legacy of the Italian Social Movement, and points out that her election in 2022 was met with much concern in Italy and abroad, so much so that US President Joe Biden spoke of a dangerous global drift towards authoritarianism.
However, Time points out, Meloni has been able to surprise: on the domestic front, she has softened many of her more extreme positions, while abroad she has shown herself to be pragmatic, earning cross-party respect, from Biden to Ursula von der Leyen to US Vice President J.D. Vance.
Almost three years into her term, the leader of Fratelli d’Italia is described as one of the most important figures on the European scene, with a style that, according to the magazine, could profoundly influence the political evolution of the entire continent.
