Foreign Minister Araghchi threatens an immediate response and speaks of ‘total war’ if Iran’s nuclear sites are attacked

Iran warns the US: any attack against its nuclear sites will lead to an immediate response and possible full-scale war in the Middle East. This was stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during an interview with Al Jazeera, issuing a clear warning to Washington and its allies.

‘A historic mistake’

According to Araghchi, military action against Iran’s nuclear programme would represent ‘one of the biggest historical mistakes’ the US could make. ‘If our nuclear sites are attacked, we will respond immediately and decisively,’ the minister warned, pointing out that such a scenario would lead to “total war in the region”.

Escalation of tensions

Araghchi’s words come in an already extremely tense context between Iran and the US, with bilateral relations compromised by years of sanctions, mutual accusations, and military incidents in the Persian Gulf. Recently, Washington has stepped up its pressure on Tehran, with growing fears that an attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure could become a real possibility.

Iran, for its part, has always insisted that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, but the US and its allies suspect that the Tehran regime is developing the capability to build atomic weapons.

What are the possible scenarios?

If the US were to actually strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, Tehran’s reaction could be devastating. Iran has a network of allied militias in the Middle East, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Shia militias in Iraq, and the Houthis in Yemen, that could be mobilised to attack US and Israeli targets in the region. Moreover, the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil transits, could become a critical point of confrontation.

Araghchi’s warning is therefore a clear signal: an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would not go without consequences and could trigger a new international crisis of unpredictable proportions.
