The Israeli prime minister pushes for total conquest of the Strip. The IDF warns of danger to hostages and risk of humanitarian disaster

On Thursday night, the Israeli security cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to conquer Gaza City, one of the most densely populated centers in the entire Strip. The decision was communicated through a statement from the prime minister’s office, which confirmed the intention to proceed with a military operation despite warnings from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

According to internal sources, the IDF warned the government of the high risks to the lives of hostages still in the hands of Hamas, as well as the potential for a humanitarian disaster in an area already on the brink of collapse. Despite this, Netanyahu reiterated his ultimate goal to Fox News a few hours before the cabinet meeting: “To conquer the entire Gaza Strip.”

The operation may not stop at Gaza City

The official statement from the prime minister’s office explicitly refers to an action to “defeat Hamas,” an expression that suggests the possibility of further operations beyond the mere conquest of Gaza City. Some sources suggest that the cabinet may also have approved subsequent phases, which have not yet been publicly announced.

The decision represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict and comes at a time of intense international pressure to protect civilians and promote a negotiated solution. However, Netanyahu appears determined to pursue wide-ranging military action, despite the potential human and political costs.
