Pope Francis died at 88: a new phase opens for the Catholic Church
The Argentinean pontiff passed away at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican: he was the first Jesuit and Latin American pope in history, a symbol of openness, reform and closeness to the poor
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died this morning, Monday 21 April 2025, at 7.35am, at his residence at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican. The news was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, camerlengo, in an emotionally charged message.
‘With deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised’.
The Pontiff passed away at the age of 88, after having faced respiratory complications in recent months, including bilateral bronchopneumonia and polymicrobial infections.
