A fire near Glasgow Central station causes building collapse and rail shutdown, after a large blaze engulfed a historic building close to one of Scotland’s busiest railway hubs.

Dozens of firefighters were dispatched to Union Street in Glasgow shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday after flames broke out on the ground floor of a four-story commercial building, according to emergency crews. The fire quickly spread through the structure, eventually leading to a partial collapse.

Despite the scale of the incident, authorities said there have been no reports of casualties so far. However, the impact on transportation is expected to continue throughout the day as emergency operations remain underway.

The fire near Glasgow Central station causes building collapse and rail shutdown and forced the closure of Glasgow Central station, the busiest railway station in Scotland. National Rail confirmed that the station will remain closed and said it is not yet clear when it will reopen.

“Disruption to services to, from and through Glasgow Central is expected to continue at least until the end of the day,” the rail operator said in a statement.

No trains are departing from or arriving at the main platforms of the station. Services running through the lower-level platforms are continuing but are not stopping at Glasgow Central.

Rail operators also warned of wider disruption across the network. TransPennine Express said its services between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street and between Glasgow and Manchester Airport will not run today. Trains operating between Edinburgh and Newcastle or Manchester Airport are also expected to face delays and cancellations in both directions.

By 5 a.m. Monday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said crews were still working to bring the massive blaze under control and urged the public to avoid the area.

A spokesperson said firefighters were first mobilized at 3:46 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, after reports of a fire at the ground floor of the four-story building.
