Olympics, Russia towards reinstatement? New IOC president opens up participation
Kirsty Coventry, elected to lead the International Olympic Committee, says she is against the exclusion of warring countries. The Kremlin rejoices: ‘Ready to return to the podium’.
Russia could officially return to the Olympics as early as 2026. The new president of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry, has declared that she is ‘opposed, in principle, to any exclusion’ and has proposed the creation of a task force to define clear and fair criteria on the participation of countries involved in conflicts. It was an opening that restored hope to Moscow after its exclusion from the Paris 2024 Games, where Russian and Belarusian athletes competed without a flag.
Coventry’s election was enthusiastically welcomed by the Kremlin. Vladimir Putin praised the new IOC president, while Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov spoke of a ‘stronger and more independent’ Olympic movement.
