The Aga Khan IV passed away in Lisbon at the age of 88. He founded the Costa Smeralda Consortium in 1962
Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismailite Muslims and founder of the Costa Smeralda Consortium, died in Lisbon on 4 February 2025 at the age of 88. The official announcement came from the Aga Khan Development Network, which announced his passing peacefully, surrounded by his family.
In 1962, Prince Aga Khan transformed an unspoilt corner of Sardinia into one of the world’s most exclusive destinations, giving birth to the Costa Smeralda. The Consortium expressed its condolences with a simple but meaningful message: ‘We have no words. Only one: thank you’.
The Aga Khan Development Network recalled its commitment to improving the quality of life of people around the world, regardless of religious affiliation or origin, and emphasised its willingness to pursue its vision. His successor is expected to be announced soon.
