President announces the construction of a 30,000-seat detention centre in Cuba’s military prison

Donald Trump has announced a drastic plan for dealing with irregular migrants with criminal records: they will be transferred to Guantanamo, the controversial US military prison located in Cuba. Speaking from the White House at the signing of the Laken Riley Act – legislation dedicated to the young woman killed by an undocumented migrant – the president said he would order the Department of Defence and Homeland Security to set up a new detention centre at the facility, with an initial capacity of 30,000.

Trump stressed that Guantanamo is ‘a hard place to get out of’ and that the mass transfer of irregular detainees there will quickly reduce the number of illegal criminals in the US. The prison, built in 2002 to house suspected terrorists after 9/11, now has only 15 detainees, but under the new directive it will become a key focus of the administration’s immigration strategy.

During the speech, the president reiterated that illegal entries from the border with Mexico have drastically decreased and that his administration will deport thousands of migrants who have committed crimes in the United States. ‘In Venezuela the crime rate has plummeted, here it has increased. But we will get rid of murderers and traffickers,’ he said.

Besides national security, Trump addressed other issues, including US funding abroad. He announced the cutting of $50 million earmarked for Gaza, accusing the Biden administration of indirectly funding Hamas. According to the president, the money was spent to buy condoms that were then used to build explosive devices.

On the domestic front, Trump also announced drastic measures for federal workers, ordering all employees to return to office by 6 February. ‘If they don’t return to work in attendance, they will be fired. So we can also shrink the government,’ he concluded.
